Naturopathic Doctor – Physiotherapist (Europe) – Medical Anthropologist

As an introduction I would like to divulge a bit about myself to you. I was born and raised in the Netherlands; a country you may know for its tulips, wooden shoes, windmills, and a guy that stuck his finger in the dyke to stop it from leaking. Or you may have heard of its liberal views on matters like abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage and legalized cannabis. While I’m certainly a product of this open minded culture, when I think of my home country, I think of the lakes where my dad thought me sailing, the vast network of bicycle lanes that connects each and every part of the country, and meeting friends over “koffie verkeerd” (café-au-lait) on a patio on one of the many picturesque squares or canals of downtown Amsterdam.

I didn’t start my professional career as a Naturopathic Doctor, but I have always worked in the health care field. My work as a physiotherapist and medical anthropologist took me across the world (the Netherlands, China, Malawi, Canada), and I have encountered and studied many traditional, spiritual and religious healing traditions, which helped me open my mind to see beyond the western bio-medical model, and understand how each approach has a role to play, depending on each individuals unique needs and characteristics.

My first 10 day silent meditation retreat in 2005, made me realize (experientially) the healing power of the mind. Contrary to what I had known thus far, this source of knowledge had nothing to do with books and academics, but rather with a deep connection to my own inner self and intuitive knowing. This realization fueled another stream of courses and workshops in various energy / mind-body medicine modalities (Reiki, psychosomatic therapy, mindfulness based cognitive therapy). The aftermath was that I found my work as a Clinical Research Specialist at Toronto’s St Michaels Hospital (see Publications) no longer fulfilling albeit financially rewarding. Naturopathic Medicine gave me the platform I needed to integrate my analytical mind with my inner healer.

Becoming a Naturopathic Doctor enabled me to combine my rigorous clinical training with my passion for healthy living, psychotherapy, mindfulness & spirituality, my own personal growth & wellness, as well as that of others. I offer a holistic, open-minded perspective to your health problems & concerns, and welcome people from all walks of life. In addition to running a busy practice, I’m a Teaching Assistant of Health Psychology at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, and co-facilitate Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) groups with a psychiatrist. In my free time you can find me enjoying outdoor sports, rock wall climbing, Latin dancing, yoga and mindfulness meditation.
